Community kickoff event on October 19 showcases unique food offerings, free merchandise, and more
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Oct. 16, 2024 – Following a soft opening during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) announces the launch of the Market @77 food hall, which features craft beers, specialty cocktails, fresh baked goods, artisanal cuisines and more. Located on the ground floor of Building 77 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the food hall will hold a special launch event this weekend on Saturday, October 19.
The launch celebration will provide community residents and visitors with the opportunity to come into the Yard, explore the diverse menu offerings from a variety of vendors, and observe the production of favorite foods being made at the Market. This family-friendly event also coincides with Open House NY weekend, where urbanists get behind-the-scenes access to city gems like the Navy Yard and other popular destinations.
Located at the Yard’s main entry point and spanning nearly 40,000 square feet, the Market @77 offers a diverse selection of culinary delights for visitors and employees.
“As an urban manufacturing hub, our goal in setting up the Market @77 was to incorporate food production as a part of the range of industries here at the Navy Yard while instilling a sense of Brooklyn pride and creating a centralized place to support local businesses,” says Lindsay Greene, BNYDC President and CEO. “By bringing these talented businesses under one roof, we hope to foster a sense of community, connection, and celebration of the incredible unrivaled food culture that makes Brooklyn unique.”
The Market @77 food hall features a variety of local vendors, some of which have on-site production facilities to manufacture products for wholesale distribution. From family-owned companies to a craft brewery, the Market @77 food hall businesses include:
- Russ & Daughters: A New York City institution known for its appetizing foods, such as its hand-shaved smoked salmon and lox, and its iconic baked goods such bagels, babka, challah, and rugelach. Visitors can also watch wholesale production on display.
- Hungry House: This eclectic, sustainability-focused restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring fresh poké, delicious burgers, and a variety of bowls. Hungry House sources many of its ingredients from suppliers, farmers, and producers who share a commitment to producing quality foods that are environmentally friendly.
- Jalapa Jar: A local favorite that offers a wide variety of fresh salsas and guacamole made in-house and Austin-style breakfast tacos and bowls at its retail counter. Jalapa Jar also produces its wholesale products on-site for sale at national markets like Whole Foods, locally at grocery stores like Wegmans, and online via their website or select third-party sites like Fresh Direct.
- Pizza Yard: Owned and operated by Joseph Marazzo, who trained to become a pizzaiolo in Italy, Pizza Yard uses traditional Neapolitan techniques, a brick oven and industry best, imported ingredients to produce Italian-style pizza at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In addition to its savory pizza menu, Pizza Yard also offers Italian breakfast pastries and coffees such as espresso, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and lattes. There is a second location on Governor’s Island, which operates seasonally.
- Sabor: This family-owned business brings authentic Colombian and Dominican heritage to life in Queens and Brooklyn through offerings like empanadas, pernil, and other delectable classic Latino dishes.
- Rustik Tavern: One of Bedford Stuyvesant’s most popular community staples, Rustik Tavern’s menu offers an elevated twist on classic comfort food favorites like wings, sliders, and mac and cheese. New options include tostones with shrimp or avocado toast for breakfast.
- Transmitter Brewing: This “urban farmhouse” brings a unique perspective on traditional styles to the local New York City craft beer scene. Through the informed use of yeast and hops, Transmitter Brewing is redefining what craft beer should taste like. In addition to manufacturing their wholesale products on-site, the Brooklyn Taproom at the Navy Yard offers an ever-rotating stock of unique farmhouse-style ales.
- She Wolf Bakery: This beloved Brooklyn brand uses organic grains from regional growers to craft nutritious, naturally leavened loaves and other craveable baked goods. She Wolf Bakery moved its production facility to the Navy Yard earlier this month. In the new space, they will expand their current Greenmarket and wholesale production, and their first cafe is slated to open later this year.
“It was important to us to keep our whole operation in New York City, so we were thrilled when the opportunity came up to take 18,000 square feet in Building 77,” said Russ & Daughters owners. “We now use it not only as our shipping hub, but also as our central bakery and production kitchen to supply our other locations.”
“The Navy Yard is an exciting and inspiring place to run a business,” said Andrew Corrigan, co-founder and president of Hungry House. “The history of the industry here is palpable, and the other entrepreneurs working here have an infectious enthusiasm!”
“We opened Jalapa Jar at the Brooklyn Navy Yard because of its array of customers and the support we get to grow our small business,” said Steve Smith and Tommy Byrnes, co-owners of Jalapa Jar.
“I expanded my business to the Navy Yard because of their support for women-owned, small businesses,” said Cristina Franco, founder and owner of Sabor. “We started out with a food pushcart, and the Navy Yard gave us a home. Here, I got the opportunity to grow my reach and continue serving delicious food to Brooklynites and visitors from around the world.”
“We opened Transmitter Brewing at the Navy Yard because of its rich industrial history and connection to the community. We have the space to brew our unique ales while fostering a sense of community. From workers to visitors to well-behaved pups, we welcome everyone to our Brooklyn Taproom at the Yard,” said the co-owners of Transmitter Brewing.
“The Navy Yard is a unique place in Brooklyn where industry and culture come together – and it’s why I wanted to set up another location here. At Rustik, we believe in doing one thing right which is serving people good food. I’m proud to help feed and fuel the thousands of people who work at the Navy Yard, and the many visitors who frequent it,” said Frantz Mettellus, founder and owner of Rustik Tavern.
“We moved our production to the Navy Yard because they gave us the space needed to keep growing our business, and now to have a permanent retail presence for our loyal customers,” said Andrew Tarlow, owner of SheWolf Bakery. “We’re excited to join the many other businesses that call the Market @77 home.”
“From the Navy Yard to Governor’s Island, we’re proud to be located in places that double as cultural destinations and offer high-quality Neapolitan pizzas to New Yorkers who appreciate our classic approach to making good food,” said Joseph Marazzo, owner of Pizza Yard.
The Market @77 food hall is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST at Building 77, 141 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. Hours vary per vendor. For more information, please visit: brooklynnavyyard.org/marketat77/
